STICKY

As of now, I'm mass-flocking the whole of this LJ, for reasons that have nothing to do with you (most probably).
I intend to return and one by one make public again the posts I don't mind leaving out there - the fic, the recipes, some other things - but in the meantime, if there is any entry of mine you tried to load and could not because you found yourself locked out, no matter the entry, just contact me by PM or email to let me know, give me the link, and I'll unlock it (except if it's the one with the tentacles and the gooseberry jam and the-- but we don't talk about this anymore. shhh).
Seriously, don't hesitate to ask. I won't bite.

F/C-wan*, halp!
I asked this in a locked post among other things but I thought it'd be more intelligent to also ask publicly: What hosted-blog service do you think is most suited for a very public blog project? not something as popular a Cute Overload, but something where you can reasonably tinker with a sober layout, eventually add ads on the side if the fancy takes you, and be sure it won't crash in case of traffic spikes. Blogger, Typepad, Wordpress.com? Pros/cons? Any ideas, favorites, hard-ons for a service little heard-of, hate ons for the web bigwigs because their usability suck? any link to an online benchmark recently conducted?
Lifehacker mates, web geeks, librarians of lore, I call on you for help. Pls for to tell me! Share NOLIDJ.

I have arrived (a good 6 hours ago, but there things to do before posting to say so). And now that it's about 7pm here and I've been up for 34 hours with only 3 separate hour-long naps, I'm gonna collapse.
Tomorrow I try to set up the desktop, and I get back to work.
hope you're well! seeya later.
Re: mysterious sentences
7/1/09 01:15 pm
So yesterday evening, a really funny thing happened. Right at the moment when I was posting this, Ces was posting that. Jinx! Seriously: she pasted the link to her fresh comment in the chat window to me right when I was pressing on the Post button in Semagic. I laughed and laughed. And laughed. With glee. It was one of these 'well, there's a reason we're friends' moments. =)
Anyway, then the following discussion ensued. I'm CPing here because ot covers basically what i wanted to write in my follow-up post!

So. Once again, first of all, or most important of all: THANKS. It's the toughest part of my work not to understand text or to render it in French but to project what CAN be read by various people - because no two readings are exactly alike, and the potentialities contained in the original text should be conserved as much as possible in the translation - and having actual various readings to discuss is much better than trying to make them all up myself.
Second, I find it fascinating that apparently only Ces (and me) a/ thought of the meaning 'just/precisely' for even, and b/ thought to check the dictionary to see if it helped dispel the weirdness. It's perhaps not the case - perhaps some of you, several, thought to check and decided they didn't have that kind of time (hey, we're all busy, and this ain't your job), and perhaps several of you thought of 'just' and dismissed it. It seems to me it's kind of a rare meaning for the word nowadays, and perhaps it's a UK vs US word usage also, plus, and that accounts for a lot, the word placement for 'even' in the sentence mirrors the more common usage for it, the position it takes when it means 'despite', when it highlights a contrast, an extreme, a surprising thing. So that's really confusing - and then we all try to make sense out of that contrast. Where's the contradiction, the surprise? That she CAN imagine this even though she's seizing? That she's imagining it EVEN NOW that she's also remembering stuff like getting a scan? Etc etc - y'all explained what it could perhaps maybe possibly be with great clarity. Those were all the hypotheses I'd formed too.
Yet, now that you have my most firm reading - what do you think?
Whoa.

So, The Pirate Bay got sold.

( ramble and ponder )
It so happens it also reminded me that for a while I'd wanted to make a post about The Pirate Bay's OTHER services, besides the torrent stuff. Of course, now, I don't know what's gonna happen to these. But I'm betting that for non-critical use they'll be around a while, and if you don't have any data you want to protect from prying capitalistic eyes, but you're just looking for a fleeting service at a certain time, they can be useful. Here they are:
BAYIMG - Free uncensored image hosting. For when you have soomthing important to say in image form that your normal hosting won't accept under their TOS. Not for porn, though, as there are other ones for porn, like imagefap.com
PasteBay - Free uncensored text hosting. I used to use and love ShortText.com but Pastebay is as easy to use, 'free-er', and has more useful functionalities. Paste and share snippets easily! It's almost better than GoogleDocs for people who deal in raw HTML or raw Text, and of course it's even better than that for coders. There's even syntax highlighting.
Slopsbox - Temporary email service to avoid giving your email to spammers and marketers: "Slopsbox is your temporary mailbox, the e-mail address you use to register for random services. It's a long-finger up the butt to spammers who wants your real e-mail. Slopsbox™ is great when you need to retrieve the information from an e-mail but don't want to reveal your identity. Fuck you Sir Spamalot!"
There also used to be Bay words : TPB's blog service, for free expression. Uncensored words - but they're not accepting new registrations, and haven't been for a year, so. Sorry.

I'm in the middle of crunch time on this godforsaken data entry stuff, I've had 3 days of unending headaches, and I pushed back my departure to the House to 'later, when I'm in a state to think about it'.
But I'm too beat to talk about any of that in depth, so here, have the fun stuff.
I found these guys today after a convoluted clicking session via A Softer World, and in their shop, the first thing I saw was this amazing dachshund print which I HAD to post because, well, it's bang on for txvoodoo. :D
I also love what these guys do, thought for some reason I cannot make their store link work - the page never loads properly, despite the fact that it works fine when I wanna load the portfolio page. Oh well.
I want one or two knitter's journals from Schoolhouse press, despite the fact that I think they look kind of ugly-ish. The insides sound ACE, though.
For those I didn't tell yet (those who truly care already know, I think): I'm knitting this shawl at the moment, in a merino-silk laceweight dyed with organic dyes (it's a lovely mild purple). Heavenly yarn, and really fun pattern, too. I don't know who it's going to be for yet. btw the photos on the elann page don't do it justice - ravelry peeps should check out the projects on the site to see better looking examples of it.

6/21/09 12:25 am
Goooood evening guys and girls. I'm sorry I sollicited your help and then neglected to actually, you know, USE the encouragements: no writing done today, and no work either.
What happened was, I spent over 2.5 hours going to the store and then pondering hard-drives and 5-for3 DVD package deals, and when I came home I was pretty fucking beat. Plus I had no strawberries (though I bought myself a soft-serve vanilla ice-cream). But! I had A TERABYTE OF BLANK HD SPACE for backups, whee!
That's right, I bought my first 1TB disk. I was looking at smaller capacities (500 GB mostly), but then there was this deal on the 'rugged' 1TB Western Digital drive, and I said what the hell. The Lifehacker guide I'm using for my automatic backups says you need a drive that's 4 times bigger than what you wanna store, so. I have some margin built-in, that way.
So then there I was, home finally but also beat and crampy (it's hot out, my shoes hurt, and I'm bleeding - I have good reasons to feel a bit weak, is all I'm sayin'), and I started tidying the contents of my hard drives so I could have things in a clean state before starting the backups.
And that's exactly what I've been doing! I fit in some vids-watching (had to look to identify and rename files properly!), a round of scrabble against thingswithwings (she won, unsurprisingly), dinner, even a few emails... but mostly I'm still pushing files around and setting up regular backups and cleaning my tinier external drives.
Except since it's now late and I'm still crampy and even-more-tired, I've also put on some Leverage and I'm planning to veg a bit then go to bed.
Tomorrow: porn + work.
Thank you for your lovely comments, friends. <3333

Little Toftest, I haff presents for joo!
I am negligent, and so I forgot to LET YOU KNOW FIRST, and I posted it all in a rush as soon as I could, but: your requested Sweet Charity podfics are here! Well, two of them so far.
Fun With Comas & Attack of the giant Robot from Outer Space - both links to the mp3 files in .zip form at the Audio Archive server. If you want to see the whole posts w/ details (duration, size etc), they're here and there respectively on the sgapodfic comm. Hmm. Shouldn't I start one here on Dth?
ETA: OMG I AM ASHAMED! I forgot to mark EVERYWHERE that these have been edited and (hence) beta'd by the wonderful general_jinjur, without whom these would still be languishing files on my hard-drive. THANK YOU, O AWESOME.
Whip-wan!
6/20/09 03:19 pm
Flist, circle, I need your halps!
I'm about to be a good girl and go buy a new external hard-drive to make intelligent mirror backups ala Time Machine (my misadventure yesterday served as a lesson, even though I have semi-solid backups already, and this precise event didn't threaten my data so much as the functioning system). It's sunny out, so yay, and I am all freshly showered and dressed in comfy but stylish clothes; I'm taking my iPod for podfic company and fully intend to buy myself some strawberries on the way back.
But. When I come back (in an hour or two) I need to get cracking on either some more work or some kink_bingo writings. And I know me! I'll be lazy! I won't feel like it! I'll wanna veg out instead, and perhaps knit.
So I'm opening this post up for your chastising and/or encouraging comments. If you feel up to giving me a stern look, waving a pom-pom, or tempting me with the wave of a friendly tentacle tip, have at!
This floor is yours. :)
iconses!
6/20/09 02:20 am
I used to use the LJ scrapbook to upload the screen caps I sometimes take of shows I watch, as well as the icons for share I sometimes make from them. That's dead now, and so I had to pick another image hosting service.
I decided to give a try to the Google Picasa Web albums (which Ashkitty recced) and so I've re-uploaded my icons for share, which you can all peruse and grab from over there now (Doctor Who, Veronica Mars, Entourage, Dark Angel, SGA, Bones, BSG, Heroes, Grey's Anatomy, Elijah Wood and more.
I have yet to reupload the screen caps, but that'll come in time. :)
Also, I need to put up new ones! Middleman, Leverage, etc. All in good time.
Okay, folks, gather 'round for new adventures in geekery!
6/19/09 08:14 pm
Anyone?

I still have a few invite codes for Dreamwidth, if you want them.. Feel free to comment, PM or email me for one. :)
Prepare for ramblings!

Feels like I haven't blogged in a long time.
- I finally watched the last episode of In Treatment 2 - I don't have big thoughts but some remarks to perhaps marshal into an entry some time. Or not (I am lazy).
- I'm enjoying Southland - it's very good, really! - but a/ I have a softened shell after years of editing my TV watching for fantasy and humor and SF, apparently, because the gritty reality stuff is REALLY painful to me (is all the more reason to watch it, I guess) and b/ the bleeping of swear words is driving me crazy.
I saw a presentation online once by Steve Pinker where he was explaining that swear words REALLY do have a different effect - that parts of our brains light up when we hear them that otherwise don't get pinged by discourse (can't me more precise, sadly, as I've forgotten all the exact information). I wonder now, when we're watching a show like Southland, with one beep every... 8mn or so (not so many that it's a festival, but enough that each of them jolts me into an annoyed 'Oh COME ON!'), do those parts of our brains light up too? I'd like to see some precise research. Because my wild guess here is that when I know PRECISELY which word hides behind the beep, my brain reacts to what I know rather than what I hear.
Also I made screen caps for icons of my favorite character, the lovely fierce black cop who kicks ass. The others annoy me a lot, but I LOVE her. No, I don't know her name (yet), but then I don't know any of their names. Except the blonde wife Tammy, because her husband keeps using her name again and again. Blame my lack of braincells and my foreignitude - some series' dialog are way harder to decipher to my French ears. (I will learn her name before I make icons, promise!)
- Tomorrow is World-Wide Knit In public Day! I have to decide where/when/what I'm gonna do. A little browsing later should tell me if there's anything like a gathering happening near me, though I admit I am skeptical.
- Oh, oh, and I've of course eaten through all of Big Bang Theory already (I was done with it over a day ago) - I'm well into rewatching by now. Sheldon is still love. Plotting is a go (but I'm very slow).
bingo plans
6/3/09 02:00 am
First I looked at the card with a mind to finding a possible bingo. The first square I got excited about, I admit, was furries/plushies, because it's the oft-mocked thing (and that annoys me). Subsequently, I started thinking I'd try to do a line bingo for line 4.
But then, there are enough mental roadblocks on my way to getting something written, and I don't think that trying to force myself to fill squares if I'm not inspired will actually help. So I'm not convinced that's what what I'll do, anymore (although sometimes, constraints breed creativity and inspiration - and it's hard to know in advance which it will be. Brains: so weird and ornery).
SO ANYWAY. Here's the sum total of my thoughts looking at my card so far.
( get yer kinks in here )
Any comments? nudges? ideas?
Infinite possibilities (part II)

I put on some Farscape about two days ago, and I chose to start with the very end of S2, for some reason. ( spoilers ) HOW COULD I FORGET?! DAMMIT. OH JOHN.
(Man, I LOVE this show. It is PACKED WITH STUFF. And clever. And emotional. And funny. And complex. And I love them all. I just. *flails*)
*puts on next episode* *enjoys cartoon*
* BTW, there's a tentacled creature in Farscape 3.13, Scratch 'N Sniff, called a Hangi, particularly interested for kink_bingo, if I may: Hangi, generally believed to be mythical, have removeable eyes -- optic nerves which continue to send back images and record, even after they're separated from the body. Kabaah generally keeps an eye hanging out in the LoMo bar, but he also has optic recordings of the interior of Fe'Tor's compound. http://www.snurcher.com/episodes/313.shtml I might have to go and post that to the kink_bingo wiki-like entry later.
This is it
5/26/09 11:48 am
In 4 days the very last of my paid time on LJ expires. That should have happened 6 months ago, but then I had an open help request for some privated entries of mine which had disappeared, and when the request got closed (they couldn't help me) out of the blue after a few months, LJ gave me 6 months of paid time in compensation - it was right before my paid time expired, and sustained my LJ and my LJ usage for a while more.
Last time in preparation of the end of that era, I had gone through and saved my files from the Scrapbook; saved my icons; used the mass-privacy edition tool; weeded my tracked items. This time I have to do that all over again, and yet, I have no mental energy to get it done AT ALL. I find that I both would want everything as smooth and clean as possible on the LJ side, AND that I wish it could get to that glossy state of sorted readiness with no input and no effort on my part.
I realized that if I want my comments and participation on LJ to remain icon-significant I basically can't weed out any icons ever again, since it'll be tapping in the pool of inactive ones every time I delete one.. (and I can't risk, for example, coming to a place where things like the Establishment OTP icon disappears. Which reminds me, it needs uploading on Dth soon). This means if I have any changes to do I need to get them done before the paid time expires. But again, I'm so unmotivated. I have as much desire to go fiddle with that than I want to fill my tax forms.
From free time onwards, I don't think I'll be making public entries on LJ anymore (I have taken to going back and mass-locking a month at a time, but without access to the mass-editing tool, that'll suck). But I'm not completely decided yet.
*insert Samwise quip here*

I have a great many pictures of dusty things to transfer and edit and comment; a damn headache; stiff ancient embroidered linen sheets in the trunk of my car; a yoga class coming up; no time to dawdle; entirely too much work coming up in the next 3 weeks; still not decided if I'm going to Berkeley or not...
But the first order of business is: my dreamroll is unreadable because the name of the poster does not appear on the post, which is a problem that I know is known and fixable, but I have forgotten where the instructions to fix it LIVE. PLS DREAM-WAN PLS, lend a tired girl a hand?

via cofax7: all these Tuesday links are revelent to mah intrests. *notes for later perusing* and some of you might also care. Also, Bookslut is looking for more columnists! You great review-writing peeps should apply. Yes, I mean YOU. *pointed look*
via kormantic: you can go vote on this poll from the Orlando Sentinel - orlandosentinel.com/news/opinion/ - asking whether or not the state of Florida should reconsider its ban on gay marriage. Feel free to close and reopen your browser to vote several times if you're not above unscientific-poll-ballot-stuffing. Apparently some homophobic group must have spread the word on their side, because the No numbers are jumping pretty wildly all of a sudden.
The great happy-making thing on my mind is the "Unicorn Herd" thread on deadbrowalking, where PoC check in to testify to their existence in the SF/F fandom - gold extracted from the pile of manure that Clueless Whites dumped in the field, again.
...and another happy, less intense: these pictures twittered by Lenny Kravitz and linked to benevolently by I think the glorious sparkymonster. There's more of a connection than might register, since my first thought (beyond mm hott!) was that these would handily provide material for icons featuring this great "rarity" of our world: a person of color READING A BOOK11!!!
With Racefail/MammothFail at the forefront of my brain and reading time, I was also compelled to go back to the fund-raising post on verb_noire (hadn't been to check on the dollar amount in a little while), and seeing that their updated goal has not been met yet, I thought it'd be a good idea to mention it again. Donations welcome until July 31st!
ETA: I had forgotten this! "White" & Nerdy, by talitha78, a GREAT Gus (Psych) Vid you all need to see. Srsly. Go.
Ouch.
5/9/09 05:10 pm
Still failing at sleeping "right"; got up at 1pm. Started to do the Home Ec stuff like laundry and filling the sink with hot soapy water for the washing up, then decided it was high time I go do the much needed grocery shopping run. I go to the store jut sown the road, which is a small supermarket, and this time I took three heavy-duty 'forever' bags to fill up. I thought it's be heavy but I'd come back slow and things would be okay.
I hadn't foreseen I'd throw out my back when putting the bags down to check on the mailbox on the way back in.
I iced my lumbar region for a while, sitting in the least-hurting position in my desk chair.. and I kind of intended to get work done, because I really need to, but... I think I have to go lie down and sleep on it, see if that changes anything.
I don't even have ibuprofen, only aspirin. Wah.
This was not the entry I had started writing.
5/7/09 08:17 pm
giandujakiss released a great Dollhouse vid, I hear: It Depends On What You Pay, which I have not yet watched and which apparently people describe saying "best vid I never want to watch again" because of how painful it is. I came to it through the discussion on Dollhouse in the comments of this post, which in turn I found through a link by cofax7.
By the way, ( disjointed thoughts on Dollhouse, mostly ep 1.10 )
